As promised - here is the second part of my reflections. There was one sentence in the BBC handbook for grumpies that made me a little uneasy: “The church of the Grumpy Old Men is a broad church. We welcome sinners and, unlike most churches, we don’t invite you to repent.” Meaning: You have a right to be grumpy, it’s good for you and don’t let anyone tell you any different!
Contrast that with the apostle Paul’s advice to the Philippians (4:4): “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!”
So here is my take on this dilemma: Being grumpy is one thing. Wallowing in it another. Rejoicing in the Lord is one thing. Walking around with a permanent grin on my face another.
Edda once heard some good advice: If you are not happy with something, you have three options: Love it, change it or leave it.
So here is my resolution for 2007: I WILL be grumpy about things that are not right. But then I will try to do something about them - love them, change them, leave them - and not be grumpy for grumpiness’ sake. AND: I will try to “rejoice in the Lord” a bit more - because there’s loads to be grateful for. And one other thing I confidently predict: There will be times in 2007 when I will need to repent - as there were in 2006. The church of the Grumpy Old Men may not be for me after all…

Wie versprochen - Teil 2 zum Thema Griesgram. In dem zuvor erwähnten BBC Buch stimmte mich ein Satz nachdenklich: “Die Griesgram Kirche ist eine breite Bewegung. Wir heißen Sünder willkommen und - im Gegensatz zu den meisten Kirchen - laden wir nicht zur Buße ein.” Auf gut deutsch: Du hast ein Recht miesepetrig zu sein, es ist gut für dich, und lass dir nichts anderes einreden!
Stell das neben die Empfehlung des Apostels Paulus an die Philipper (4:4): “Freut euch im Herrn. Ich betone es noch einmal: Freut euch!”
Hier ist meine Sicht der Dinge: Unzufriedenheit mit so manchem ist das eine, sich darin zu wälzen ein anderes. Sich im Herrn zu freuen ist das eine, mit einem künstlichen Dauergrinsen herumzulaufen ein anderes.
Edda hat einmal einen weisen Rat gehört: Wenn du nicht glücklich bist mit einer Situation, hast du drei Optionen: Lieben, lassen oder verändern.
Hier ist also mein guter Vorsatz für 2007: Ich WERDE mich ärgern ueber Dinge die falsch sind. Aber dann werde ich versuchen, zu lieben/lassen/verändern - und nicht griesgrämig sein nur weil das ein so schönes Gefühl ist. UND: Ich will versuchen mich ein bisschen mehr “im Herrn zu freuen”, Gründe genug gibt es. Und ein weiteres sage ich mit Zuversicht voraus: Es wird Momente geben in 2007, wo ich Buße tun muss - so wie schon in 2006. Die Kirche der Miesepeter ist vielleicht auf Dauer doch nichts für mich…
