Grumpy Old Men - part 1

Just been to post-Christmas sales for half an hour, observing the terrible rituals of today’s majority religion - a religion of death (”Shop until you drop!”). And I realise again, what a grumpy old man I am! I got the official book for Christmas from another grumpy old man - here is the blurb:

“For years they thought it was just them. Irritated and tormented by everything around them from call centres to nose studs, from speed bumps to ring tones. Then along came the BBC2 series Grumpy Old Men and they knew they were not alone.
It turns out that 35-54-year-old men are the grumpiest group of people in history. Grumpier than their parents, who were just glad to have survived the war (…) and grumpier than their children, who don’t care about anything except iPods and tatoos.
It is now a modern movement - and its members are proud of the title. ‘If you aren’t grumpy,’ says Bob Geldof, ‘that means you are content with the world. And who the **** could be that?’ ”
And what about this thought from p.34? “We are the ones who were encouraged to dream. The only trouble is that somewhere, over the rainbow, the dreams we dared to dream really did not come true.”

Why “part 1″? Well, there is a lot to be grumpy about, so expect a few follow-ups!

Gerade fuer eine halbe Stunde dem Winterschlussverkauf ausgesetzt gewesen und die Rituale der heutigen Mehrheitsreligion beobachtet - eine Religion des Todes (”Geld ausgeben bis zum Ableben!”). Und ich habe mal wieder gemerkt, was fuer ein “Grumpy Old Man” (in etwa: “Alter Miesepeter”) ich doch bin. Zu Weihnachten habe ich das offizielle Handbuch von einem anderen Miesepeter bekommen. Hier ist der Klappentext:

“Jahrelang dachten sie, dass sie die einzigen sind. Genervt und gequaelt von Allem um sie herum, ob Telefonzentralen, Nasenstecker, Geschwindigkeitsrampen oder Handyklingeltoene. Dann kam die BBC Serie Grumpy Old Men und sie wussten, dass sie nicht alleine sind.
Studien haben gezeigt, dass 35-bis-54-Jahre alte Maenner historisch die groessten Miesepeter sind. Schlechtgelaunter als ihre Eltern, die nur froh waren, dass sie den Krieg ueberstanden hatten (…) und genervter als ihre Kinder, denen nichts wichtig ist, ausser MP3-Spielern und Taetowierungen.
Die Miesepeter sind heutzutage eine Bewegung und stolz auf ihren Titel. ‘Wenn du kein alter Miesepeter bist,’ sagt Bob Geldof, ‘heisst das du bist zufrieden mit der Welt. Und wie zum **** kann man das sein?’ ”
Und auf S. 34: “Wir sind die Leute denen Mut gemacht wurde, zu traeumen. Einziges Problem: Irgendwo, jenseits des Regenbogens, wurden diese Traeume nie wahr.”

Warum “Teil 1″ in der Ueberschrift? Es gibt so vieles zum “grumpy” sein - es folgen deshalb wohl noch ein paar Eintraege zum Thema…
